Welcome!

It’s amazing to me that I have now ventured into the digital world.  Welcome to my site, Making Math Make Sense.  With over 20 years of teaching experience, my passion is working with teachers and students to unlock the mystery of “math”.  Were you fearful of math when you were growing up?  Did you hate the time of day when your teacher said, “It’s math time boys and girls!”  As a parent, do you dread trying to help your own child with their math homework?  As a teacher, are you trying to change your students’ attitudes about math?  If any of these questions made you pause and reflect, this is the site for you!

For the past six years I have been traveling across the country to provide professional development to teachers, students, and parents.  As I share ideas and activities, I often hear, “Do you have a website?”, “Where can we learn more from you?”  Well, I’ve finally given up my excuses and branched out into unfamiliar territory.  This is what I ask of teachers when I present them with “new” strategies, ideas, and games to use with their students.  It’s uncomfortable, but I promise I am going to put forth my best effort to make this site successful for all of you!

Before I begin blogging about math, let me share a little about me.  I am a proud undergraduate and graduate student from the University of Dayton, GO FLYERS!  I worked as a full-time classroom teacher for 17 years, in several different elementary grade levels, and special education.  In the early 2000’s I had the opportunity to attend seminars and conferences on different ways to approach teaching math in the classroom.  As I will share in future posts, using the information I gained in these trainings, my students’ understanding of math showed drastic results.  This success helped guide me to my current position as a math consultant.  As a mom of three, very busy children, I also understand the parent side of helping with homework.  It is my goal to have posts to support parents as well.
