Are your students struggling with addition and subtraction? Need help determining which strategies to teach? Discover how to build your confidence and theirs by teaching addition and subtraction from single-digit numbers through multi-digit numbers with various manipulatives and strategies that focus on comprehension and connections. Leave this session with a toolbox of techniques you and your students will love!

Build your students’ confidence and skill by teaching multiplication & division of single- to multi-digit numbers using manipulatives and strategies. Help students deepen their comprehension as they see the connection between the methods. Leave with strategies to help reinforce multiplication & division understanding and build confidence back in your classroom.

Students need a deep understanding of how fractions work before algorithms and abstract equations make sense. During this session, teachers will explore fraction manipulatives and learn ways to guide students in naming, modeling, analyzing, manipulating, and talking about fractions. Through the strategic use of activities, this session goes beyond rules and procedures and presents new ways and ready-to-use materials to motivate students and build their comfort and confidence around fractions.

Finding common denominators; multiplying straight across; keep, change, flip…Do your students really know why and when to apply these rules? Teachers will build a fraction toolkit which we will use to dive deeply into understanding the why behind fraction rules. Most educators were only taught tricks and rules when it comes to fractions. After our time together teachers will build their own understanding of the why before how when working with fractions to ensure they pass that understanding along to their learners. Teachers will walk away with strategies for teaching unit fractions, equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting with like and unlike units, and multiplying and dividing fractions. A strong emphasis will be placed on using correct academic vocabulary.

Discover strategies and tools to help children build a strong understanding of numbers in the early years. Help children visualize the math they are learning and using, preparing them to add more challenging math concepts later that build on a solid foundation of numeracy. Learn proven methods to avoid rote memorization of rules and math facts, and instead develop mathematical thinkers who are set up for success in the early grades and beyond.

Fill your instructional toolkit with effective, hands-on approaches to helping young learners reason with numbers, recognize relationships and patterns, and focus on sense-making. Learn no-to-low-prep, ready-to-use materials and countless ideas to energize your instruction around such concepts as subitizing, counting on, comparing numbers, making ten, and the part-part-whole relationship of addition and subtraction. Your students will become mathematically confident and eager for more!

Come experience how to develop patterns and connections between multiplication and division to understand facts. Through concrete materials, visual models, and purposeful practice, students will then build accuracy to gain efficiency. Leave with a game plan to assess facts and instruct in a way that makes sense!

Picture this! Problem-solving is made easier when using simple but dynamic, concrete, and visual strategies. Take the problem out of word problems for you and your students and strengthen their understanding of mathematics while developing their problem-solving skills. This session gives you the strategies to take your students' problem-solving to the next level and stimulate mathematical thinking that encourages creativity and collaboration. Develop your students' learning habits through fun and engaging lessons and activities that will get your kids thinking like mathematicians!

Do you want to use a guided math format in your classroom but aren’t sure where to begin? During our time together we will explore different structures for guided math to allow you to choose which works best with your teaching style, grade level, and students. Sample rotation charts, classroom management tips, and procedures will be shared.

In addition to the broader topics listed above, the following can also be incorporated into trainings:
  • Math discourse
  • Effective math vocabulary
  • Place value
  • Rounding & estimation
  • Using number lines effectively

The Daily Number Routine I learned from Hilty Consulting is a game changer for my fourth-grade class! It continually reviews the skills needed to scaffold the instruction for all levels of learners so that they become more confident and successful with the fourth-grade standards and state testing. Kids come back to my class every year and see the Daily Number Routine Board. They typically exclaim, 'I remember coloring the fraction circles and creating fraction equations! That was so fun! It truly gives them ownership and time to fully comprehend the foundation of fractions and deepen their understanding of multiple math concepts.
Kim Densmore, 4th Grade Teacher, Clarkdale-Jerome, AZ
While attending the Math Summit in 2023, I learned the power of a daily number sense routine that has completely changed the way I teach math in my 3rd grade classroom. My students have grown so much as mathematicians through this simple yet powerful daily routine. The knowledge and wisdom that Kristin shares with teachers is what makes her such a great asset for any school district. I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to learn from her.
